Variations on a Theme of Rossini, by Bohuslav Martinů, for cello and piano
Bohuslav Martinů's Variations on a Theme of Rossini, for cello and piano, is a work of pure mischief. The Czech composer takes a melody from Rossini's opera Moses in Egypt and builds variations for cello and piano that, in a little under eight minutes, leave you breathless. Between Rossini's work and Martinů's, the legendary Paganini made his own adaptation of the Rossinian piece for violin, which he called Fantasia on "Mosè in Egitto," with the peculiarity that it's played on a single violin string, the G string. A true firework display.
Martinů, however, brings a great musical density to this piece while at the same time unfolding an intense sense of humor, varying, deforming, stretching and contracting the initial theme and also drawing on Paganinian motifs. At times, the cello and piano seem to be chasing one another. In the central section there's a slow variation that serves as a perfect bridge between the vertigo before and after it. Stéphanie Huang, who won the Suggia Prize in Porto in 2015 and is today principal cellist of the Orchestre de Paris, brings all her musicality to bear. What strikes me is watching her play with her eyes closed — this is the utmost expression of communion with the music. Pianist Gaspard Thomas is incisive, precise, and converses with the cello with total ease. Martinů is a rather underrated composer but, as happened with another illustrious Czech, Gustav Mahler, his time has yet to come.

Mozart: Sonata para violín e piano KV 304
Louise Adolpha Le Beau
